ABOUT ME

Hi, friends and colleagues around the world!

Welcome to my book website and many thanks to your interest in my work.

Here's a very brief academic history of mine. I earned a B.A. (1997) and an M.A. (2002) in the Department of English Education at Seoul National University, South Korea. I earned my Ph.D. in Second Language Education Program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (2007, Ph.D. supervisor: Dr. Merrill Swain). Since March 2008, I've been working in the Department of English Education at Chung-Ang University, Seoul, South Korea and now I'm expecting my tenure and full professorship at CAU.

I'm interested in various second/foreign language (L2) learner factors such as L2 learning/teaching (de)motivation, learner beliefs, learner identities, etc. Many of my works are based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of mind framework with specific reference to activity theory.

I think I am a prolific writer, and I love writing. I have published more than 80 articles in Korea-domestic or international journals including System, the Canadian Modern Language Review, Language and Intercultural Communication, the Asia-Pacific Education Researcher, and English Teaching. Recently, I'm trying to use mixed methods which include both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. I'm having my sabbatical this year and spend most of my time to write a book on English-learning motivation in Korea after English was introduced in the late 19th century. This book will be published by Springer.
